about
Like many others, I lost work during the coronavirus shutdowns in March of 2020. By July, I’d realized what work had been for me: a way to keep myself hopelessly busy to avoid thinking about my own fragility and death. “C’mon July” is a song about how I rediscovered a tried-and-true, vibrant-as-summer way to walk through loss and death.
lyrics
I found a space in my soul for you
In the place of my torn to do
And while the rich man I was fades away
You see I’m aching to gain what will stay
You say let’s go and take a look at the bright birds. See
Won’t they give your heart new wings
And you’re more valuable
So walk with me today
C’mon, July, like a firefly
Won’t you take my breath away
C’mon, July, I was born to die
Yet I live another day
You say the pace isn’t slow for you
But there’s a race in my heart, it’s true
And as I’m watching the day fade away
You see I’m aching to hold what will stay
You say let’s go and take a look at the daylilies
Won’t their beauty make you sing
And you’re more beautiful
So walk with me today
C’mon, July, like a firefly
Won’t you take my breath away
C’mon, July, I was born to die
Yet I live another day
I live another day
I live another day
C’mon, July, C’mon, July
C’mon, July, C’mon, July
Though I walk through the valley
Of the shadow of the trees
Which I’m sure will outlive me
Still I walk on at my ease
Cause I walk with the Maker
Of the valley, of the sky
And the Son’s gone before me
So I will live though I die, singing
C’mon, July, like a firefly
Won’t you take my breath away
C’mon, July, I was born to die
Yet I live another day
I live another day
I live another day
C’mon, July, C’mon, July
C’mon, July, C’mon, July
